With Magnesium, Potassium, Iodine, Zinc and
Selenium etc - a great mineral supplement. Calcium helps to contract
muscles and to regulate the contractions of the heart. It plays
a role in the transmission of nerve impulses and in the clotting
of blood. It also regulates the secretion of various hormones
and aids in the functioning of various enzymes within the body.
Another important biological job for calcium is DNA replication,
which is crucial for maintaining youth and a healthy body.
DNA replication is the basis for all body repair and can only
occur on a substrate of calcium! It is the calcium ion that
is responsible for feeding every cell. It does this by latching
on to seven nutrient molecules and one water molecule and pulls
them through the nutrient channel. It then detaches its load and
returns to repeat the process.

The human body is approximately 70% water by
weight. Water is made up of the gases hydrogen and oxygen. When
nitrogen gas and carbon in the form of carbon dioxide and
methane gasses are added, the total gas in the body by weight
becomes over 95%. Almost half of the remaining 5% that makes up
the human body is the mineral calcium!. It is the most abundant
inorganic element in the human body. Unfortunately our
absorption of calcium, like that of many other metallic
elements, is inefficient. It is estimated that only one third of
the amount consumed in the average diet is absorbed. The diet
must therefore supply more calcium than the amount theoretically
retained. Results from the 1997 NZ Ministry of Health National
Nutritional Survey showed that an estimated 20% of the total
population and 25% of all women consumed inadequate amounts of
calcium. In 1998 NZ Ministry of Health Targets were put in place
to aim to increase calcium intake.
The Osteoporosis Epidemic
Inadequate consumption of calcium in New Zealand and Australia
is paralleled with epidemic rates of osteoporosis. Currently 1
in 2 women and 1 in 3 men over 60 will have a fracture due to
osteoporosis. And the incidence is increasing. It is predicted
that by 2010, 1 in 3 hospital beds in Australia will be occupied
by elderly women with fractures!
Osteoporosis is a major cause of injury, long term disability
and even death. Hip fractures in particular have a very high
mortality rate, with 25 to 30% of patients dying within six
months, especially from post-operative blood clots causing
cardiac arrest. More women die from osteoporosis-related hip
fractures than from breast, uterine and cervical cancer
combined! Calcium helps to contract muscles and to regulate the
contractions of the heart. It plays a role in the transmission
of nerve impulses and in the clotting of blood. It also
regulates the secretion of various hormones and aids in the
functioning of various enzymes within the body.
The Importance of Calcium
The scientific evidence that calcium is a key to good and long
health is overwhelming, with reports appearing in the world's
leading medical journals and throughout the media. Encyclopaedia
Britannica states that recent research also points to calcium
deficiency as being a possible cause of hypertension (high blood
pressure) and colon cancer.
Bio-Link marine coral calcium is collected from the weathered
remains of Sango Coral fragments in Okinawa, Japan. As the coral
naturally disintegrates over time the coral grains are washed
out to sea by the ocean currents. This coral sand is gently
collected by suction, several miles downstream of the reefs
under the strict regulation of the Japanese Government. There is
no harm to the natural environment. Only approximately 0.1% of
the coral grain annual production is collected. Bio-Link coral
calcium contains the highest grade of coral calcium available:
The Importance of Magnesium to accompany Calcium
Magnesium is also needed by every cell of the human body, for
more than 300 biochemical reactions. It helps to maintain normal
muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, bones
strong, and is also involved in energy metabolism and protein
synthesis. Magnesium forms positive ions (charged particles) in
solution and is essential to the electrical breakdown of
nutrients and other material within the cells. Along with
providing calcium and magnesium in an ideal ratio, Bio-Link
marine coral calcium also furnishes up to 70 naturally occurring
trace minerals; including iron, potassium, manganese, selenium,
copper, iodine and zinc. This provides a rich and valuable
source of mineral elements that are extremely important to the
health of the human body but not found in most man made
formulations. The body operates as a biochemical symphony in
which many substances play a vital role. It is the combination
of these various elements that permits the body to act as a
harmonious whole.
Marine Coral Calcium and pH
All leading biochemists and medical physiologists have
recognized pH or acid/alkaline balance as the most important
aspect of a balanced and healthy body. In chemistry, alkali
solutions (pH over 7) tend to absorb oxygen, while acids (pH
under 7) tend to expel oxygen. For example, a mild alkali can
absorb over 100 times as much oxygen as a mild acid!
